5 Stars Great purchase for my Book Worm
At 22 mos. my daughter would sit for half an hour at a time and just flip through books, so she rec’d this b-day present early. Great decision! Now instead of just flipping pages, the books engage her and are encouraging learning. I heard her saying some of her alphabets with the ABC book! She loves this toy and asks for it frequently, not to mention it’s compact size makes it great for road trips and for restaurant waiting.

It’s durability is being greatly tested and so far so good! We’ve had it a month and it’s been dropped multiple times on our wooden floors and slammed on the pages frequently while learning the concept of gentle. I would highly recommend the case for convenience. It’s so much easier to carry than loose books and a small Jr. I also store him in it when not in use which keeps everything together and handy. Highly recommend this product if your child loves books; Tag Jr. enhances that experience.

4 Stars A great TAG reader for tots
Ok, first off a comparison to it’s big papa, the Tag Sr., which I also own. After the comparison I will list a brief pro’s and con’s list for the people who just NEED to skim through a review:

Regarding the reader itself (the pen thing on the Tag and the little alien thing on the Tag Jr.):

- Tag Jr. is way better for little hands, it’s little “head” fits perfectly into my 2yr old’s tiny grip.

- It seems to be a lot sturdier, my son has drops it once and again onto our (carpeted) floors and this little guy just rolls with the punches, literally.

- The Tag has a little pencil-like thingie at the bottom that activates the camera, whereas the Tag Jr. has a small circular butt, overall it helps make it much more resilient to falls and the accidental (or are they?) “slams-it-down” on the book mishaps during particularly exciting pages.

- The purple one is really pink, so keep that in mind if you’re particular about your boy playing with pink toys (also, get your head outta the gutter).

PROS:

- It’s a great fit for little hands.

- Feels sturdy and durable.

- The camera activator is much better designed for the coordination-impaired.

- There’s a list of child names on the Tag Software so the reader can greet your child by name each time you turn the device on-off.

CONS:

- Chews through batteries! The manual says not to use rechargeables, but I use them anyway, it’s just a battery hog!

- This one is PINK not PURPLE, I don’t mind, but maybe you don’t like pink.

- You need to take off the battery cover to reach the usb slot.

- The buttons are not as easy to reach when your child is holding the device and forgets to turn it on, so he will wind up banging it on the book confused until you find the small groove the button is in.

- It seems to not work if it’s not somewhat level with the book surface.

Regarding the books:

- The Tag Sr. books are regular paper books, so they tear up pretty easily. Now the Tag Jr. books are meant to be used by little ones! They’re made from sturdy cardboard and (some) have pretty, vibrant colors.

- The activities on the Tar Sr. are usually started by pressing on the specific “buttons” on each page, on the Tag Jr. they are streamlined into the experience, for example, if you touch the same object a couple times it may prompt you to find and “click” on another page in the book.

- The Jr. books seem (with reason, I guess) to be much more simplistic than the Tag Sr. ones, but that means you also get much less content and much more repetition on the Jr.

Pros:

- The books are made out of durable cardboard with (sometimes) vibrant and colorful imagery.

- The stories are more simplistic and easier for a small child to get “useful learnin’” out of.

- The activities are built into the reading experience and start when the same spot in the page is tapped in repetition, they seem fun, but my child just ignores them.

Cons:

- The activities are built into the reading experience. Yes, this is also a con, because sometimes my kid just wants a sound to play again when he touches the same image twice, as it stands, he needs to cycle through the 3 or 4 different sounds (be them activities or spoken descriptions of the objects he is touching).

- The books are small, this ain’t entirely a bad thing, but it unfortunately means there’s less things to do on each page.

- There’s too much repetition and some of the cool sound effects are hard to find and activate.

Nice to haves:

- It would be nice to have the ability to “record” a couple sentences or songs from the books in mommy’s voice, which doesn’t seem like would be THAT much of a problem to implement by the support team. (Yes, I’m talking to you guys! Stop playing with your Halos and your plastic guitars and get working on this!)

- Get those popular Tag Sr. brands on this thing! Toddlers enjoy Pixar too, you know.

5 Stars Great product at a great price
what can i say other than both my son and daughter love this. I’m glad I made the purchase. Great price here on Amazon too.

5 Stars Excellent! Better than most other tag books.
I agree with the overall sentiment that the tag reading system is a great product. However, I just wanted to chime in to say that this book is much better than the average tag book.

My daughter liked reading the story — but, what keeps her coming back are the quizzes and games. This is where the SpongeBob book shines. There is a really nice section at the back with several pages of quizzes and games. The games progress in levels where the child builds upon what they are learning. For example, there is a section on ‘past and present’ tense. First the concept is introduced, then the child is asked to pick a few words which are then used in a funny story/example. Then they play a game where the tag reads words and they must choose whether the word is past or present. The child must understand the concept before being able to choose the correct answers. I really enjoyed watching my daughter figure this out.

Overall, I think this is a great book, very entertaining and keeps the kids interested over time — which for me is important. I don’t want to have to buy a new book every week to keep my daughter interested in the toy. There aren’t that many books available and it would become expensive fast.

5 Stars Excellent Tag Book
We purchased this for my 6 year old daughter’s Tag reader system, and she LOVES it. She is a big Spongebob fan, and this is a tremendous hit. The sounds are very funny and mixed in with all the sounds and fun, the Tag reader system is really helping her be a better reader on her own.

This is absolutely her favorite Tag book.

5 Stars Learning Can Be Fun
Very good product. My wife is actually using the Tag system to learn to read English better. It’s so much fun for her that she doesn’t even realize she’s learning basic principles that all English learners must learn fo a solid foundation. Kudos to Leapfrog!

5 Stars Spongebob
I purchased this book for my 4 year old, who can’t get enough of Spongebob and Patrick, and he loves it, he still listens to it eventhough he has the story totally memorized, he actually reads along with the story now (more from memory than actual word recognition). In addition, my 18 month old has got into the act, and he’s started to memorize it. I highly recommend this product.

5 Stars the kids love it…
You can never have enough Spongebob! That’s how my kids see it. I have yet to meet a leapster game I didn’t like. It’s Spongebob, and leapster the perfect combination for kids. Don’t get me wrong, I hate Spongebob as much as any parent, but the game’s not for me now is it?

5 Stars SpongeBob Squarepants through the Wormhole
I purchased these games for my grandson. He said they were fun and he was learning alot. He’s 5 and only received the games on 2/26 for his birthday. Sorry I have no more feedback than that.

3 Stars It’s Okay
I just purchased this game for my four-year old daughter. I am an elementary school teacher, and I think the game is fairly challenging. The screens are pretty monotanous and overall, my daughter finds the game boring. The other Sponge Bob game for Leapster is better.

5 Stars GOOD CHOICE FOR 6 Year olds!!!
My six year old twins (boy and girl) each got their own Leapster this year for Christmas and of course you then have to purchase the cartridges. They like Spongebob and generally he gets on my nerves after a while because there isn’t much educational content to the shows. Well, the Leapster game is actually an exception. The kids LOVE it and it teaches them as well. Overall, a good thing for all involved!

5 Stars Great Deal
This was brand new, still in original packaging and the price was amazing. Fast shipping. Everything was great. Thank you!!

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Easy to navigate
One of my goals in getting games for our son’s Leapster is that I wouldn’t have to constantly help him. This game is easy to navigate and doesn’t seem to frustrate him. It also has just enough of a challenge, so I don’t think it’s too easy either. I bought this at Wal-Mart for $18 (two weeks ago), so this price it a little steep.

5 Stars Leapster 2 is a hit!
My 5 year old daughter received the Leaptster 2, a Disney princess game and the kindergarten game for Christmas. The Kindergarten game is by far her favorite. She would play with it for hours if I let her. My 3 year old loves it too. There are many fights over the Leapster and the Kindergarten game.

5 Stars Held her attention!!
We just got the Leapster2 for our 4.5 year old and chose a couple of games – you want to be picky since they are expensive and you don’t want so many as to overwhelm them. This is one of her favorites and she delights in getting points to buy the robot parts. She comes running in the room to shout “I spelled a word” and that she got to complete a robot. She also enjoys the Pet Pals game. This is a great educational toy, but can you will need to limit their time (she would play all day if I let her). The Disney Princess Enchanted Tales game did not hold her attention nearly as long, and she is a princess fanatic.

4 Stars Tech Toybox Price Gouging
Tech Toybox is selling this for $64.99 on Amazon. What a ripoff. They are taking advantage. Amazon seems to let this price gouging happen but will soon figure out that they’re losing customers due to price gouging by their partners. Amazon should list suggested retail price on all items where possible if they care about their customers

5 Stars leap frog educational game: Kindergarten
Granddaughter loves this game, even her brother who is 3 seems to be able to play well with it.

4 Stars Great Game for Diego Lovers
I got this game for my three year old and he taught himself to use most of the games after a short lesson. He loves it. Great for education and even a little dexterity.

5 Stars great game
This game is great. My daughters – ages 3 and 4- love it. It teaches them adding, subtracting, and number recognition.

5 Stars Diego
My son LOVES this one! He has several to choose from and this is the ONE! I am amazed at how quickly he has been learning it since he just turned 3.

5 Stars Super educational and lots of fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is an educational game. It teaches spanish/english words, it teaches about animals, numbers, to add, to subtract. It is lots of fun. My twin 4 yr olds absolutely love it!!!!!!

5 Stars Awesome leapster game!!
We got this for our 3yo son for Christmas. We weren’t expecting him to catch on right away since he is so young (just turned 3 in Nov.) but he proved us wrong. He quickly learned how to control Diego and complete the missions.

There are 3 areas to play (desert, rain forest, Antarctica) and each area has 3 levels of difficulty to chose from. The first level teaches basics such as “Find the number 4″ “Find a red shape”. The more difficult levels work on larger numbers and math skills.

I think my son will be able to grow into this game and be able to use it for several years. Great game!
